Dr. Ponce has been practicing bariatric surgery since 1998 and has extensive experience with the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, gastric sleeve procedures, endoscopic procedures like the intragastric balloon, revisional surgeries, etc.
Known throughout the country, he was the principal investigator for the ReShape weight loss balloon clinical trials, and for the “C” trial with the Lap-Band® and the Swedish (Realize™) Band trial. He has spoken internationally about his research.
Teaching Around the World
Dr. Ponce has been a consultant for the makers of gastric banding devices (Allergan and Ethicon), balloon devices (Reshape) and many others, has been the co-director of many bariatric surgery courses, has trained hundreds of surgeons and allied health staff, has proctored hundreds of surgeons during their first balloon, gastric banding and sleeve cases.

Dr. Ponce trains surgeons around the US and internationally.
Dr. Ponce is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). Maintains membership in the ASMBS, IFSO, SAGES, SSAT and AOA. Additionally, he served as the Chair of the Bariatric Surgical Review Committee from 2009-2010, which established guidelines for Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence.
Dr. Ponce worked closely with creating the national bariatric Center of Excellence program.
He also Served as Councilman-At-Large of the ASMBS Executive Council, President of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery from 2012-2013 and President of the International Federation for Surgery of Obesity North America Chapter from 2013-2014.

Involved in Clinical Research and FDA Trials
Dr. Ponce was the Vice President and founding member of the ASMBS Tennessee State Chapter. Dr. Ponce has treated thousands of morbidly obese patients and has dedicated his career to advocate and support obesity care by working with insurance companies and lawmakers to establish better policies for the surgical treatment of obesity.

Dr. Ponce has been the Medical Director for the Bariatric Surgery program at Hamilton Medical Center, in Dalton, Georgia, and Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
He completed his General Surgery Residency at East Tennessee State University and has published numerous articles in peer reviewed surgical journals, lectured in different meetings and been a guest speaker in international congresses and courses
